Do you know what keeps a hive protected? If you think it's just the honey, then get ready to meet the real hero hidden in the world of bees: the propolis.

This product is a real natural shield, and bees know exactly how to use it. But what is propolis and what is it good for? Let's find out!

What is propolis

In addition to the pollen and nectar that bees use to produce honey, our bees also collect resins and sap from plants to produce propolis.

Propolis is a resinous, brownish substance whose consistency depends on the temperature it is exposed to: at high temperatures, its consistency is flaky and, at low temperatures, it takes on a rigid, wax-like texture.

The sap and resins of the plants are collected and then mixed by the bees with wax and saliva. The flavour, colour and aroma vary according to the region and the plants where they were collected.

The constitution of propolis

Propolis is a very complex substance, made up of more than 300 active components! Here are the main ones:

  • Resins and Balsams (50-60%)
  • Beeswax (30-40%)
  • Essential oils (5-10%)
  • Pollen (5%)
  • Flavonoids and Phenolic Acids

Its benefits

Here are some of the main benefits of propolis for our health:

  • Strengthens the immune system
  • Relieves inflammation and is effective in treating sore throats and skin irritations.
  • Wound healing

It really is a very useful product to always have on hand, to help with the initial treatment of small everyday ailments!

How it's marketed and how it's used in everyday life

Propolis is available in various forms, such as dropper bottles, sprays, capsules and ointments, with dropper bottles being the most common. O spray makes it easier to apply to the skin and soothes sore throats, while dropper format allows for precise dosing and is ideal for ingesting, helping to strengthen the immune system.

Why do bees need propolis?

Propolis is used by bees to cover the walls of the hive. They use it to cover cracks and unwanted openings, preventing draughts and exposing the hive to animals.

One of the main functions of propolis is to keep the hive free of germs, bacteria, fungi and viruses. Thanks to the virtues of this substance, the hive is considered one of the purest and cleanest natural atmospheric environments on the planet.

In addition to its protective and insulating functions, propolis also plays a crucial role in regulating the temperature and humidity inside the hive. Bees need to maintain a stable environment to ensure the healthy development of larvae and the preservation of honey.

So propolis is not just a defence substance, but a vital component for health and harmony within the hive, ensuring that this environment is safe, stable and conducive to bee growth. Through the use of propolis, bees are able to create a space that favours not only their survival, but also the production of honey, which we all enjoy so much.

In Mel PirataWe understand the importance of this natural element not only in preserving the hive, but also in producing the pure, delicious honey we offer.

      Good afternoon, Ilda,
Thank you for sharing your question with us!
Propolis is a versatile product that can be consumed in different ways, the most common being through drops. Usually 15 to 30 drops are diluted in a glass of water or tea. If you prefer, you can also consume it directly if you can tolerate the flavour. It is recommended that you take it 1-3 times a day, depending on your needs.
It's always advisable to start with smaller doses, especially if it's your first time consuming propolis, and to consult a health professional if you have any doubts or allergies.
We'll soon have propolis available in our shop. Stay tuned!
